James Daniel is one of a small group of living artists whose work harkens back to 19 th Century painting both in subject matter and in technique. Using classical Italian and French techniques such as grise, James paints portraits, still life’s and figure studies. All work is done from life without the use of photographs or electric lights. Painstaking layering and glazing leads to works of great intensity and drama.
Daniel has perfected this approach as an apprentice to internationally known painter and fresco artist Ben Long. Over seven years working alongside Long has given this young artist an early maturity in technique and style. James Daniel also lived and studied for three years in Florence, Italy, as well as one and a half years at the Paul Ingbertson Atelier in Boston. He majored in art at the Savannah College of Art and Design. James Daniel currently resides in Asheville, North Carolina where he has a studio and teaches at the Fine Arts League.
