Gordon Jameson has been painting for over twenty years in the Northeast, California and here in North Carolina where he now resides. His work has grown and developed into very personal expressions, each of which begins with a sketch taken from life. Jameson describes these sketches as memories translated into lines, shapes and notations about color, dark and light. “I look at a part of my garden for a long time thinking there must be something there. I have to be ready to see it,” says Jameson. “Then one day the light is different or there is a color shift. Perhaps the leaves fall to reveal the lines of branches. Then, there it is, connections and a composition. I make the sketch and return to the studio.”
The artist sees these notes and lines as memories and they have a tendency to trigger related ideas. Gordon Jameson enjoys this process of an image building its own connections as much as any other aspect of his art. “A passage in the memory begins green then along the way perhaps a blush or red suddenly appears or a line merges two shapes. Was this new note there from the beginning? Maybe it is a bit of another passage, reoccurring. Each new image is a part of an ongoing story, a string of tales woven and rewoven sharing threads.” Jameson follows each sketch with a small painting on paper, and finally a painting on canvas. Each step is part of the “conversation” he is creating. Gordon Jameson explains, “The themes of connectedness and memory are ongoing in my work. I currently find expression of them in organic forms – garden views or landscape. These forms resonate for me now, however over the years I have found expression of them manifested in various ways. My paintings are always my own private conversations in my own visual language. My work connects me to memory of my past as well as to the collective memory of life. It continues to lead me to realize how intricately connected everything is.” For more information about Gordon Jameson, please click on this link to read his vitae. |
