George Bireline (1923-2002) is a central and influential figure among the South's visual artists. Bireline drew national attention with his color field paintings of the 1960’s and continued working in many styles during his lifetime, including abstract expressionism, trompe l'Oeil, social commentary and figurative. Bireline received a coveted Guggenheim Fellowship in 1967 and was honored with a major retrospective in 1976 at the North Carolina Museum of Art. His work can be found in the permanent collections of the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington DC, the Mint Museum Charlotte, NC, the Asheville Museum of Art, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Richmond, VA, and the Ackland Museum of Art Chapel Hill, NC. He also taught throughout his career at the School of Design at North Carolina State University from 1955 until his retirement in 1986.
