Who isn’t familiar with the Pink Panther; animation art of this silent pink character is highly prized for quality, rarity and the memories it brings. Cartoon cels and drawings of the Pink Panther, The Inspector, Hoot Kaloot and many others were the creations of the DePatie-Freleng Studios. Founded by director Isadore "Friz" Freleng and producer David H. DePatie in early 1960s, Depatie-Freleng animation came out just as Warner Brothers was closing their animation studio and the market for animated cartoon shorts was in decline. Freleng, who had worked for Warner Brothers, began by directing animated commercials for television, but soon after they were asked to create an animated opening for the Edward Blake movie, "The Pink Panther". The title sequence stole the show and the studio continued to direct and produce animated shorts based around the character up until 1980.
Depatie-Freleng animation cels are very special. Not only were they hand-inked which was unusual for 1970’s animation, but each vintage Pink Panther original cel was inked with a darker pink line giving the character a very unique look. The original production animation art by Depatie Freleng studios had the look and feel and aesthetics of the late 60’s early 70’s and, honestly, who will ever be able to get that theme music out of their head?
