Provenance: This painting was part of the Capehart Collection of more than fifty works inspired by musical compositions. Homer Capehart, a leader of the radio and phonograph industry and a U.S. senator from Indiana, commissioned most of the paintings during the 1940s, many through the Philadelphia advertising agency N. W. Ayer & Sons, Inc. After Capehart’s business was sold, the collection became the property of Miss Sherry Britton, an entertainer well-known for her work with the U.S.O. during World War II. |
