Jacques-Nicolas Bellin was one the most important and prolific French cartographers of the mid-eightenth century. Bellin was responsible for an enormous output of charts and maps while in the service of the French Hydrographical Office. This particular map comes from" l'Abbe Prevost's Histoire Generale des Voyages" (1746-1757). The piece is an excellent example of Bellin's work demonstrating both fine engraving and a high standard of geographical accuracy. This very important map is included in the collections of UNC, Harvard, Yale, John Carter Brown and the Charleston Museum.
